Parade of Homes

The word parade brings to mind a party, a procession, a celebration — pretty flags, marching bands, an assembly of revelers, or just a joyful ostentatious display. Small wonder, then, that the Greater San Antonio Builders Association chooses to showcase the best of San Antonio builders’ creations each year with a unique kind of parade. In fact, next to San Antonio’s Fiesta celebrations on the River Walk, theirs is one of the most highly anticipated and exciting parades of all — the GSABA Parade of Homes.

The Parade of Homes is San Antonio's premier new home event, a way for builders and interior designers to showcase their work, provide inspiration, ideas and helpful information that the public can see first hand during a spectacular community home tour.

This annual event gives visitors an opportunity to parade through large fully decorated dream homes in a different community each year as a way for everyone in town to get to know the designers, builders, local furniture and appliance retailers, architects, landscape artists, pool builders, patio specialists, cabinetry makers, tile and flooring specialists, home audio/video providers, security system installation specialists and more, while visiting new neighborhoods, too.

Besides the pure voyeuristic fun of seeing the inside of fabulously designed and decorated mansions and spacious medium-sized homes with lush landscaping, beautiful pools and fabulous special extras (flat-screened televisions, home theaters, home gymnasiums, butler’s pantries and the like), visitors enjoy exploring unique floor plans and gathering ideas about exciting new trends in building materials and more, and seeing what top area interior designers are able to do with the help of local furniture retailers, high-end appliance dealers, decorative painters and faux-finish experts, beautiful fabrics, and big budgets — all within in a short time frame.

The 2008 Parade of Homes this past August did not disappoint. Spon-sored by CPS Energy and the Greater San Antonio Builders Association, the event was held at Palacios at Cibolo Canyons, a spectacular new subdivision and site of the new JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa, as well as two Tour-nament Players Clubs (TPC) golf courses.

While the Parade of Homes generally isn’t themed, this year GSABA wanted to celebrate the fact that today’s homebuilders and homebuyers are consciously striving to create more environmentally friendly spaces that leave a smaller carbon footprint. So, in that spirit, this year’s parade became the first-ever "green" Parade in San Antonio, a joint effort made possible by Cibolo Canyons, Forestar Real Estate, Build San Antonio Green and the GSABA. The homes showcased in this parade were all designed and built with Mother Nature in mind — attention to details that make the homes more energy-efficient and earth-friendly. GSABA  has long recognized the importance of being “green,” and so in 2002 it joined forces with the Metropolitan Partnership for Energy (MPE) to create the Build San Antonio Green program in order to certify homes as being built “green.” MPE and GSABA are committed to educating builders and homeowners about the importance of environmentally friendly building and its benefits.

This year’s “green” Parade of Homes featured these popular San Antonio home builders: Bridle Bit Custom Homes, Dale Sauer Homes, Don Craighead Homes, Genesis Custom Homes, Kyle Lindsey Custom Homes, Mike Hollaway Custom Homes, Summit Homes by Andrea Carol Inc., Greenwood Custom Homes and Uptmore Custom Homes.

So next year, don’t let the parade pass you by — enjoy the best of San Antonio builders’ dream homes.
